If you ever feel like you’re behind, stuck, or missing content, that’s normal. Tales of Xillia encourages exploration, experimentation, and replaying areas with new knowledge.

How Tales of Xillia Wants You to Play

Before diving into combat or quests, it’s important to understand the design philosophy behind Tales of Xillia:

  • Combat is real-time, but timing, links, and Artes matter more than button-mashing.
  • Character growth depends on Lilium Orb skill planning, not just level.
  • Side quests are optional, but many provide critical upgrades or unlock later benefits.
  • Dialogue and cutscene options may unlock additional scenes or character development if you explore fully.

Tip: Slow down. Take the time to talk to NPCs, examine your environment, and experiment with your party setup. Rushing leads to missing upgrades, materials, or optional conversations, something I learned a lot later in the game.

Early Game – Hub Towns and Combat Basics

What I recommend you do

  • Explore each town thoroughly; even decorative areas can hide items or dialogue triggers.
  • Check shops each time you return; inventory refreshes and new items appear as the story progresses.
  • Experiment with party links, connecting the right characters unlocks defensive abilities and combo attacks.
  • Complete early side quests for materials that will save you grinding later.

Common mistakes that I made

  • Ignoring towns because they “look done” can lock you out of early equipment upgrades.
  • Skipping optional dialogue may prevent later Artes or link bonuses.

Tip from my first playthrough: After a major story event, revisit towns. Many hidden interactions only appear once your party hits specific story beats.

How to Avoid Early Frustration withCombat

Combat is deceptively deep. Early battles may feel easy, but the game quickly introduces enemies that punish mistakes.

Core Tips

  • Link characters deliberately; defensive or ranged support is critical in tougher encounters.
  • Chain Artes strategically, don’t just spam the attack button.
  • Pay attention to enemy patterns and telegraphs.
  • Guard and sidestep instead of rushing attacks.

Personal note: I found that over-attacking in the early chapters made mid-game boss fights much harder. Slower, deliberate tactics pay off.

Lilium Orb – This is your Character Growth Map

The Lilium Orb is central to leveling your party.

How to Use It Wisely

  • Early on, focus on survivability skills and healing.
  • Mid-game, start branching into combat combos and elemental weaknesses.
  • Late game, specialize characters to suit your preferred combat style.

Spreading points too thin across multiple paths makes Artes weaker than focusing on one or two key areas.

Tip: Check each character’s link bonuses, some Artes only unlock if multiple skills are developed in sequence.

Mid-Game – Optional Content and Backtracking

Around the middle of the story, you’ll notice areas or items that weren’t accessible before.

What to Do

  • Revisit towns, dungeons, and earlier paths, new NPCs, items, and dialogue appear.
  • Prioritize side quests that reward gear, rare materials, or additional combat bonuses.
  • Keep your party balanced; bosses now punish single-strategy approaches.

Frustration I faced: Some optional dungeons and items are easy to miss. I found rotating the camera and inspecting every corner solved this issue.

Boss Encounters – Strategy

Bosses aren’t about luck; they test your understanding of combat and mechanics.

Tips for defeating bosses

  • Enter fights fully healed, I mean why would you bother with low health.
  • Adjust links and party formation to exploit weaknesses.
  • Observe attack patterns before committing all resources.
  • Don’t be afraid to pause and reflect; many fights require patience over brute force.

Personal note: My first boss attempt failed because I rushed links and didn’t prioritise defensive Artes. Slowing down and reading attack patterns made a huge difference.

Late Game – Do this before the Final Chapters

As you approach the climax, preparation matters more than raw level.

What to Check

  • Upgrade weapons and armor across the entire party.
  • Stock consumables, including healing items and buffs.
  • Review Lilium Orb paths to ensure Artes and passive skills are optimized.
  • Complete optional quests that can’t be revisited post-story.

The mistake I made: Neglecting secondary characters in favor of the lead party member, which made late-game battles much tougher.

Avoiding Burnout

Tales of Xillia Remastered is shorter than other modern JRPGs but still demands attention.

  • Switch party leaders to keep combat fresh.
  • Rotate Artes and links to experiment with new strategies.
  • Take breaks after long dungeon runs to maintain focus.

Tip: The game is meant to reward thoughtfulness, not speed-running. Patience makes the journey smoother.

Replayability

Once finished, New Game+ is highly recommended:

  • Play through the alternate protagonist route.
  • Catch missed conversations, optional items, and side quests.
  • Build optimized Lilium Orb paths from the start.
  • Combat flows faster with already-leveled characters.

My second run felt completely fresh and made me appreciate the depth of linking and optional quests I initially skipped.

Advice for First-Time Players

  • Explore thoroughly, even small areas matter and to be fair this is what makes the game shine.
  • Don’t ignore dialogue or side quests.
  • Use links and Artes strategically; button-mashing is a trap.
  • Revisit areas after major events for hidden content.

Tales of Xillia Remastered is about attention and consistency, not just grinding or combat speed. Once you understand the systems, it’s incredibly satisfying.

Tales of Xillia Remastered rewards patience, exploration, and smart combat choices. Mistakes aren’t punished immediately, but attention to detail makes all the difference.

This walkthrough won’t tell you the story or spoil surprises, but it will help you play smarter, miss nothing important, and enjoy every step of Rieze Maxia.
